I'm still fleshing some of this out in my head, but I was reading an article on the ISS, and one thing that was mentioned was power issues. If you move it too much, the solar panels can no longer collect enough solar energy.
Why not use a miniature nuclear reactor? Shield it well, and tether it to the station. Could it really generate more damaging radiation than, say, the sun?
